This work is still in progress. The name Fool's Paradise comes from Doris McCarthy's studio and home in Scarborough Ontario. I spent 3 months there during the fall of 2016. These works will culminate in an exhibition at Nicholas Metivier Gallery in early 2018. After being away from Canada for quite some time but spending my summers in Banff Alberta, I realized how impactful the landscape has been for not only my personal histories but also in the way I think about space in painting. I was born in Scarborough Ontario and quickly moved to a small town where our house backed on to a large forest. It was in this rugged space that I learned how to explore the world, through building forts, and making imaginary games among it's paths, flora and fauna. Always fascinated with the paradox between the artificial and the natural, the tangible and the illusionistic, these works continue to explore these polarities while investigating a subject that is deeply rooted in my personal background.
